If you want to jailbreak then stay away from iOS 5.0.1

Yesterday, @Pod2g tweeted this message :

As iDownloadBlog points out, since Apple is aware of the issue and will likely patch it in iOS 5.0.1, @Pod2g recommends not updating. The question is if you should update or not. If you are having really bad battery problems as some users have pointed out, then this update should bring the fix.

In-store purchasing with Apple Store iOS app

I walked into the Apple Store today and saw something very interesting. An Apple employee was helping a middle aged man with his purchase. The friendly blue shirt guy helped him install the Apple Store app. But then he showed something really cool. He scanned the item with customers' iPhone. He then proceeded to put in the credit card number, and voila -- that was it for the purchase. A happy man walked out of the Apple Store! I'm sure he's not going to forget that shopping experience for some time now.

Engadget has some really cool hands-on review on the updated app. If your interested check it out, and let me know what you think!

The Difference the iPhone 4S IR Camera Filter Makes

At Camera Technica, there is a great post about how infrared affects image quality, and why Apple’s IR filter leads to so much higher quality photographs.
When IR light is allowed to pass through to the sensor, the IR light contaminates the channels (mostly the red channel) with information that was not visible in the original scene. The result is an image with a color cast. The images below show the impact of IR contamination on a scene with a dark background. The iPhone 4 image shows a reddish cast due to the extra IR light recorded on the red channel. The 4S image shows a background which much more closely resembles the original scene.
I thought it was cool to see the improvement:

Power Support iPhone 4 film set

Today I picked up my new iPhone 4S at the Apple store! The first thing I did when I got home was to apply a screen protection film set i bought some time ago from Power Support. I got the one for $19.95 with two front screens and one back. It fits iPhone 4S without any problems. The two front ones are HD clear and anti-glare. The reason i chose to get that package is if something happens to the first screen, I can replace it with second. The anti-glare film works wonders in direct sunlight as it dissipates the reflections.

I have had the same film on my iPhone 4 and this is the third time I am getting this package. From all other films I've tried I find this to be the easiest to install. I also feel that this film gives me much better protection than any other brand. It doesn't get many fingerprints either. I'd recommend this set for anyone who wants to get the best protection possible from scratches on their new iPhone.

As I mentioned earlier the installation of  the film is a breeze. There is no need to spray any solution. Just have to make sure you put the film on in the dust free environment, clean the glass very thoroughly and use the included pre-installation films to clean off the small dust your eyes can't see. Make sure you align the film properly. I found it easiest to go from earpiece to home button. If you notice that the film is a little misaligned, then all you have to do is apply a strip of included tape to peel it carefully and align. If you follow all the steps the installation shouldn't take more then a minute or two. The final results are amazing- can't even tell that there is a film applied!

You can grab one at Amazon, or you can buy it directly form Power Support. Their customer support team is great and if you have any questions ask me in the comments section below =)

MobileMount - a very cool mount!

I recently stumbled upon a very cool KickStarter project founded by JR Sanchez. Basically this is a suction mount for phones or tablets. It works great in car, but can also be used in variety of places at home. It has a so called "Twist-to-Lock" suction cups which by creator's words can hold the device up to weeks long. I guess we'll have to get our hands on them and see if that's true =). Hopefully the process of manufacturing wont take long now that the goal raising money has been more then doubled and on its' way to be tripled.

iOS5 "Speak" function

One of my favorite things iOS 5 brought is the "speak" function. As a college student I find myself often reading long articles, word documents, and even short stories. I found I grasp more information and can go through the reading faster if I press the speak option and read at the same time. You can do it anywhere in the system. The "speak" option should appear when you select the text you want to be spoken, and if not, then this option can easily be turned on. Just go to the Settings, Accessibility, and tap on Speak Selection.

Then you can choose to either turn it on or off and the speaking rate. Hope you like it as much as I do :)

Getting iPhone 4S is nearly impossible

No, really.
Ever since the launch on october 14 the phone has seen huge demand. The sales has topped 4 million in first 3 days. That shows how popular it is. I did not get mine right away simply because I already have an iPhone 4, and was not in much hurry to get one. But then I have played around with couple handsets and the speed difference of launching apps, and Siri made me want to get one asap. Past few days I've been trying to go to Apple Store app on my iPhone and reserve one at 9pm. But I seem to never be fast enough to even reserve!! I want the white model 16GB in particular and those seem to be flying off the reservation immediately.
Here's hoping I can get mine soon =)
